neMeeting the rapidly growing food demand in an environmentally sustainable manner is a pressing global challenge. This challenge is especially paramount in countries with high population densities and fast-growing economies, such as China. Chinese food production has been intensified to meet the rapidly increasing and changing demand for healthy, safe, and nutritious food from its growing urban population and sectors outside the food economy. As a result, the availability and quality of natural resources that are essential for food production, such as land and water, are under threat in many respects. Recent evidence on changes in natural resources quantity and the quality shows that modest successes have been achieved in reducing the rate of decline in cultivated land area, improving land quality, and diminishing water erosion. However, wind erosion, rangeland degradation, water scarcity, and agriculture-based non-point source pollution have become more problematic. Addressing this challenge calls for an integrated (‘nexus’) approach that combines sustainable natural resource management and a secure supply of safe and nutritious food by integrating their governance. This integrated approach involves reducing trade-offs and increasing synergies between sectors.
The international conference on ‘Sustainable Resource Management for Adequate, Safe and Nutritious Food Provision’ will host benchmark research on the land-water-food nexus in China. By focusing on novel theoretical approaches, new insights gained from empirical research and from large-scale modeling approaches, and discussing the policy implications of these findings, the conference aims to provide an inventory of the current state of research in this field, offer a platform for discussing trade-offs and synergies of policies and programmes, and assess the needs for future research in this important field.
The conference welcomes research papers related, but not limited, to the following subjects:
Farm scale enlargement and the environment
Soil quality and land pollution
Rangeland management and wind erosion
China’s urban-rural land management
Water pollution and water use in agriculture
Meat and dairy demand, livestock and sustainable manure management
Food supply chain and food waste
Agricultural extension and technology dissemination
Integrated analysis of land and water use in food provision
